The following is a letter sent home today to Challenge Prep Families asking for donations for West Virginia Flood victims.
Dear Parents and Guardians of Challenge Prep:
Even as school for us comes to a close, I am moved to action by the recent weather events that have put West Virginia in a state of emergency. Many communities and families face tragedy and challenges similar to what Far Rockaway faced in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Our community’s recovery could not have been possible without the many gifts, acts of kindness, and aid from government and NGOs. As an act of solidarity, Challenge Prep is giving back by partnering with two schools in West Virginia, Clendenin Elementary which took on several feet of water and Elkview Middle School where many families lost everything.
We are asking for your help with key supplies that are urgently needed. All donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday, from 7:30a-4:30p at Challenge Charter Middle at 1526 Central Avenue. The greatest needs are:
Heavy duty trash bags
Blankets, towels and pillows
Diapers (all sizes)
We understand the devastation that these schools, their scholars, teachers and families now have to work through. I encourage you to remember our recovery experience in Far Rockaway and to respond with generosity to the plight in West Virginia. I have every confidence that the greatness Challenge Prep represents will be manifested in our response.
Any questions about donations should be directed to WVfloods@challengecharterschools.org or by calling 718-473-4719.
