It was standing room only at the annual Challenge Preparatory Charter School Lottery Night held Thursday, April 21st in the school gym at 710 Hartman Lane in Far Rockaway. Almost 1100 local families applied for a chance to have a student at Challenge Prep for the 2016-17 academic year.
As families waited for the lottery to begin in a line that wrapped around the block at the school, representatives from Challenge Prep’s Parents Association were on hand to welcome the while providing organization, food and support. Various school Board Members, administrative staff and several teachers from both the K-5 and Middle School were also on site during the event.
A welcome from CEO/Founder Rev. Dr. Les Mullings was followed by remarks from Principal Debra Sostre to open the evening. With just over 90 seats available in kindergarten and limited spaces in remaining grades, many families were put on a waiting list. Students that secured a spot received a special packet about the school with further instructions and information about registration.
Dr. Mullings reflected on the evening saying, “It is always exciting to see the community support that Challenge Prep has garnered over the past six years. We are proud of the quality education we bring to the students and families of Far Rockaway. I look forward to another great year with these new students and our returning scholars.”
Challenge Charter Schools is in the application process for two new proposed K-8 schools to help meet the growing need for great schools in the Rockaways. Pending approval, the first would open in the fall of 2017.
